3 OVERVIEW

Alloy 42 is a binary nickel-iron alloy containing 42% nickel. It has a low, and nominally constant, coefficient of expansion over the range 20-300°C (85-570°F).

4 APPLICATION

Alloy 42 is used for tooling for aerospace composites, thermostat rods, for semi-conductor lead frames, in thermostatic bi-metal strip, and for metal to glass and ceramic-to-metal sealing applications in microelectronic components, vacuum devices, automotive and industrial electric lamp bulbs, transformer and capacitor bushings.

10 WORKING INSTRUCTION

Forging

Forging stock should be heated quickly to 2150/2200ºF (1175/1205ºC) and soaked for a short time only to avoid penetration of sulfur and oxygen from the reheat furnace atmosphere. Forging should not be performed below 1700/1800ºF (925/980ºC), but advice should be taken on actual finishing temperatures and their effects on material properties.

Cold Heading

Alloy 42 may be swaged or cold upset.

Heat treatment

Machining

Following are typical machining parameters

Joining

The alloy may be welded using conventional methods.

Three processes are typically used for welding Invar 42 for tooling applications:

◘ Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW aka MIG)

◘ Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW aka TIG)

◘ Submerged Arc welding (SAW)
