Why is 304 stainless steel somewhat magnetic?
Stainless steel is divided into austenite, martensite and ferrite.
304 material belongs to austenitic type. Generally speaking, it is
non-magnetic or weak magnetic. However, because of the fluctuation
of chemical composition or different processing conditions,
magnetism may also occur. However, it can not be considered that
magnetic products are not qualified. What is the reason? Austenite
is non-magnetic or weak magnetic, while martensite or ferrite is
magnetic.
Due to segregation or improper heat treatment in smelting, a small
amount of martensite or ferrite structure will be produced in
Austenitic 304 stainless steel. Thus, 304 stainless steel will have
weak magnetic properties. In addition, 304 stainless steel after
cold processing, the structure will also be transformed to
martensite, the greater the deformation degree of cold processing,
the more martensite transformation, the greater the magnetic
properties of steel.
What is the difference between 304/316 stainless steel and 304/316
stainless steel?
304 material has high tensile strength and yield strength, cold
work hardening rate, good cold forming performance and corrosion
resistance. High temperature resistance, good mechanical
properties, rust-free characteristics, deeply trusted by the
majority of users, widely used in curtain walls, side walls, roofs,
outdoor equipment and other architectural purposes, but in the
corrosive industrial or marine atmosphere, it is best to use 316
stainless steel.
The nickel content of 316 material is higher than 304 material, so
its corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance are much
better than 304 material. It is widely used in chemical and medical
equipment, marine and petrochemical equipment manufacturing, but
the price is much higher than 304 material, although the cost is
higher, because of its strong corrosion resistance, it is also
worth the money.
