Optical fiber is a light transmitting tool that can transmit light according to the total reflection principle of light in glass or plastic fibers. According to the materials used to manufacture optical fiber, there are quartz fiber, multi component glass fiber, plastic cladding quartz core fiber, all plastic fiber and fluoride fiber and so on.

The transmission modes of light in optical fiber can be divided into single mode fiber and multi-mode fiber. The core diameter of multimode fiber is 50~62.5μm, and the cladding diameter is 125μm. The core diameter of single-mode fiber is 8.3~9μm, and the outer cladding diameter is 125μm. The operating wavelength of the fiber is short wave length 0.85μm, long wavelength 1.31μm and 1.55μm.

The central glass core of single mode fiber is very thin (the core diameter is generally 9 or 10μm, so only one mode of light can be transmitted. Therefore, the modal dispersion of SM optical fiber is small and it is suitable for long-distance communication, but material dispersion and waveguide dispersion also exists, the single-mode fiber has higher requirements on the light source spectral width and stability, that is, the spectral width is narrow and the stability is better.

According to the optimum transmission frequency window, the SM fiber can be divided into two types: the conventional single-mode fiber and the dispersion shifted single-mode fiber.

As for conventional type sm fiber: fiber producer will optimize the optical fiber transmission frequency on a single wavelength of light, such as 1310nm.

Dispersion shift type single mode fiber: fiber manufacturers optimize the fiber transmission frequency at two wavelengths, such as 1310nm and 1550nm.

According to the distribution of refractive index, Sm fiber also can be divided into step type and gradual change type.
