How to test the compatibility of fiber optical modules?

We know that an optical transceiver consists of a transmitter and a receiver. When the transmitter is connected to the receiver through the optical fiber, if the BER of the whole system does not achieve the desired effect, is the problem of transmitter or the receiver? Or maybe there are problems with both transmitter and receiver. In fact, the transmitter and receiver optical module will influence each other, therefore, the standard of qualified fiber optical transceiver is any receiver can receive the optical signal from the transmitter which is even with the worst performance, and any transmitter can emit optical signal which can be received by the receiver with the worst performance.

Testing of optical transceiver is generally divided into 4 steps, which are mainly divided into transmitter testing and receiver testing.

Transmitter test, in testing, pay attention to the wavelength and shape emitted by the transmitter, as well as the receiver's jitter tolerance and bandwidth, and should note two points:

1, The quality of the input signal used to test the transmitter must be good enough. In addition, also need to confirm the quality of electrical measurement by jitter and eye diagram. Eye diagram is a common method to check output waveform of the transmitter, because the eye diagram contains abundant information and it can reflect the overall performance of the transmitter.

2, The output optical signal of the transmitter must be measured by eye diagram, optical modulation amplitude and extinction ratio and so on.

Receiver test, when test the receiver, also need to pay attention to the following two points:

3, Different with the test of transmitter, when test receiver, the optical signal quality must be poor enough, therefore, must create a optical pressure which can represent the worst signal, the optical signal must be calibrated through the worst jitter and optical power test.

4, And finally, need to test the electronic output signal of the receiver.

In summary, testing optical transceiver is a complex task, but it is also an indispensable step to ensure good performance.
