Wastewater from textile printing and dyeing plants contains synthetic and natural dyes, gum thickeners (guar gum) and various wetting agents, pH buffers and dye blockers or accelerators. After treatment with polymeric flocculants and settlers, typical monitored parameters include BOD, COD, color, sulfide, grease, phenol, TSS, and heavy metals.

Regeneration of ion exchange columns with strong acids and bases produces wastewater rich in hardness ions that can easily precipitate out, especially when mixed with other wastewater components.
