Fossil fuel power stations, especially coal-fired power plants, are a major source of industrial wastewater. Many of these factories emit wastewater containing high levels of metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium, as well as arsenic, selenium and nitrogen compounds. Wastewater streams include flue gas desulfurization, fly ash, bottom ash and flue gas mercury control. Plants with air pollution control devices such as wet scrubbers often transfer captured pollutants into wastewater streams.

An ash pond is a surface reservoir that is a widely used treatment technology in coal-fired power plants. These ponds use gravity to precipitate large particles from power plant wastewater. This technology does not deal with dissolved contaminants. Power stations use additional technologies to control pollutants, depending on the specific waste stream in the plant. These include dry ash handling, closed loop ash recovery, chemical precipitation, biological treatment, membrane systems and evaporative crystallization systems. Technological advancements in ion exchange membranes and electrodialysis systems have enabled efficient treatment of FGD wastewater to meet recent EPA emission limits. Treatment methods are similar to other highly fouled industrial wastewaters.
