Anaerobic Digester Tank

An anaerobic digester is simply a closed structure in which faecal organic matter is anaerobically decomposed. Anaerobic microbes convert organic matter into biogas, which can then be captured and used as energy for combustible gases. Methane is the most commonly captured byproduct of the digestion of organic matter, but carbon dioxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen and water vapor are also present. The advantages of this type of manure treatment include reducing odour and greenhouse gas emissions as well as serving as a renewable energy source. However, initial costs, labor levels, and continued management of microbial balance have prevented widespread use of digesters.

Anaerobic digestion reduces pathogens, viruses, protozoa and other disease-causing organisms. The ecological conditions in the anaerobic digester effectively reduce the level of pathogens. Inhibition of pathogen growth occurs in the presence of organic acids. In thermophilic anaerobic digestion, high temperatures can reduce pathogen levels, depending on the time of exposure and temperature of the digester. Longer exposure times or higher digester temperatures can increase the degree of pathogen reduction. Reduction of this pathogen could improve herd health and possibly reduce water demand

Power generation and heat

Methane production by anaerobic digestion is a significant advantage of this process. Methane is the main component of "natural gas" used for cooking and heating in many homes. In anaerobic digestion, anaerobic bacteria break down organic material in the absence of oxygen and produce "biogas" as waste. Anaerobic digesters produce biogas consisting of methane, carbon dioxide and trace amounts of other gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen sulfide.
