Non-destructive Weld Root Corrosion Testing TOFD one transmission and one reception Broadband Narrow Pulse Probe
The TOFD probe is a key component used in non-destructive testing
for ultrasonic diffraction time difference (TOFD) detection.
Working principle: The TOFD technology uses two broadband narrow pulse probes, one
for transmission and one for reception, for detection. The probes
are symmetrically arranged relative to the centerline of the weld
seam. The transmitting probe generates a non-focused longitudinal
wave beam that is incident on the inspected workpiece at a certain
Angle. Part of the beam propagates along the near-surface and is
received by the receiving probe, while part of the beam is
reflected from the bottom surface and then received by the probe.
The receiving probe determines the location and height of the
defect by receiving the diffraction signal from the defect tip and
its time difference.
Performance parameters:
Frequency range | The frequency range of commonly used TOFD probes is 1-15 MHz, with 2.25MHz, 5MHz and 10MHz being the more frequently used frequencies. |
Wafer size | The chip size range is 3 to 20mm, and the commonly used sizes are 3mm, 6mm, 9mm and 12mm. |
Wedge Angle | The commonly used wedge angles are 45°, 60° and 70°. |
Features
*Small wafers: They can achieve a large diffusion Angle and
increase the coverage area.
*Wideband: It can generate signals within a much wider frequency
range. For instance, the pass-through wave is a signal with a
frequency much lower than the center frequency.
*Narrow pulse: To achieve the best resolution.
*High sensitivity: Usually made of piezoelectric composite
materials, it has a high acousto-electrical conversion efficiency.
Application scenarios
*Petrochemical industry: It is often used for the inspection of key
equipment such as oil pipelines and storage tanks, and can promptly
detect internal defects that are prone to occur due to factors such
as corrosion and stress, thus avoiding major accidents such as
leakage and explosion.
*In the field of power and energy: During the regular maintenance
and repair of core equipment such as boilers and steam turbines in
the power and energy industry, TOFD probes can be used to deeply
detect the integrity of the internal structure of the equipment,
promptly identify potential defects and handle them.
*Aerospace manufacturing: It plays a crucial role in the inspection
of important components such as aircraft engine blades and fuselage
structural parts, capable of accurately detecting internal defects
and preventing flight accidents caused by defects.
Special type
*Phased array TOFD probe: Mainly used for corrosion detection at
the root of welds.
*Small diameter pipe dedicated TOFD probe: Equipped with a
dedicated TOFD wedge for small diameter pipes, it is used for
inspecting small diameter pipes.
*COD wedge TOFD probe: By using COD wedges, it can be used to
inspect the longitudinal welds of containers to match the
corresponding workpiece surfaces.
*Stainless steel housing wedge TOFD probe: The use of a stainless
steel housing wedge can protect the wedge.
