The SCR tail gas after-treatment of the diesel engine is effective in controlling emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and particles (PM) in the exhaust gas and meeting the requirements of the regulations. Finally, the exhaust gas in the engine is high. Nitrogen oxides (NOX) are then processed using a dedicated on-board aftertreatment system. An exhaust gas treatment strategy.

Vehicle exhaust systems are now equipped with an EGR cooler that lowers the temperature of exhaust gases as they are re-circulated into the engine. Just like any automotive cooling device, however, this cooler is also prone to leaks that can affect its efficiency over time. To help you figure out if your car’s EGR or Exhaust Gas Recirculation cooler is in need of replacing.

Once you’ve replaced the busted cooler, make sure to do regular system pressure checks. As a matter of fact, it’s highly advised to do a pressure check whenever the cooler is repaired or replaced. It’s also important to follow the exact instructions when filling the engine with coolant. Improper filling can often lead to air pockets that can easily wear out the cooler. Keep in mind that there is no single set of instructions that’s applicable to all vehicle types since the proper procedure depends on the car’s make and cooling system. So, it’s best to check out instruction tags or decals that are usually located on the firewall, radiator mount, or surge tank.

The primary feature behind EGR systems is to lower the combustion temperature, so to better achieve this effect the gas temperature should be minimized as much as possible. This is especially true for diesel engines, when up to 50% of the combustion gas can be recirculated to the intake system.

If not for a cooler, intake temperatures would be very high and could impact the combustion performance. For this reason, diesel engines often have a much larger EGR cooler.

It is also possible for gas engines to have the larger coolers, especially with recent designs taking advantage of the EGR system for fuel economy improvements, but it is also quite common for gas engines to have a pipe that has a few ripples, and the system relies on heat loss to the environment.

EGR coolers are primarily stainless steel. A major reason for that is that for the environment where the cooler is located, other metals would rust, and rust flakes can result in major damage to the engine.

EGR coolers vary in size based on specific engine requirements, including the amount of flow that will pass through the EGR, the cooling required, and the space limitations in the area. As an example, a 6.4L Ford Powerstroke EGR cooler is 22 inches long, 4.3 inches wide and 5 inches high.
