About the smell:

manufacturing and packaging. So before using, pillowcase should be washed by hand or machine. After unwraping​, pillowcore should be ventilated around 48 hours. Don't expose to the sun or wet by the water. The pillow core can be spot cleaned. The odor will air out then.
